On-site ACT Prep Classes
The ACT test continues to be the single most important test a high school student takes. At this time, about a million and a half students take the ACT test annually. The ACT is a very big deal. Students face tough competition and almost yearly tuition increases, and ACT prep programs have mushroomed into a multi-million dollar industry.
Yet despite the large amount of money spent on ACT prep, there is virtually no research to support the effects of ACT prep on score improvement. To date, Focus on Learning has the only controlled study confirming that our ACT prep significantly increases students’ ACT scores. Publishes in the 2012 Journal of College, the study found that students who participated in the coaching class increased their composite ACT scores.
What do a few points matter? A few points can make a significant difference in admission and scholarship awards. A student with a mid-twenty composite score can get into many mid-level state or private universities. A student with a 31 or higher has a shot at Ivy League schools. Scholarship awards are based heavily on ACT scores. For example, one of our students who went from a 24 to a 33 on the ACT is going to college with an annual award of $100,000. ACT scores are also important for getting entrance into specialized programs such as engineering or journalism.
Our on-site classes range from an introductory 4-hour Jump Start to a 20-hour ACT Academy. Our teachers come to your school. Our instruction is based on over 30 years of work with students. Our program differs from other ACT prep programs in three significant ways.
- Our teacher-coaches are both content teachers (English, math, science) AND trained ACT coaches. As a result, they can answer questions about specific content as well as teach ACT test strategies.
- Our instruction is individualized to students’ goal scores: students aiming for the upper 20s or higher receive a different emphasis than those moving from 18s and 19s to a 21.
- Our ACT English/Reading and Math/Science workbooks reflect that changes the ACT has made over the past years.
Students who are not blindsided by this difficult test perform better, and we will show them how to raise their scores.
